Ice Skating (Hockey/Figure) vs Roller Skating?
Hello folks i ended up in a figure skating club which teaches figure skating or hockey skating.. the one with sharp blades and ice...thinking that they r gonna teach me how to skate (roller skate out door).
Repeating Again
I wanted to learn roller skating (outdoor.. regular skating.. on roads )
But now I am in a class that teaches only Ice skating.. SO my question is..
How hard it would be for me to learn the regular skating ON MY OWN
Are they completely different ?
Will i hurt my self if i learn it ?
Stick with the ice skating lessons for 1 or 2 basic courses, especially the basics (stroking, crossovers) are very much the same for roller and ice skating, so you should see great improvements for your roller skating. You can practice on your own on rollers besides the ice skating lessons, provided you wear crashing gear (you can get it at toy stores and inline skating stores, they are helmets, kneepads, elbow pads and wrist pads, especially the wrist pads are a MUST.) Roller skate on a smooth surface, such as a very smooth parking lot (almost "creamy" asphalt, not the kind with the tons of little stones sticking out).
Next, you must decide what you want to do: quad roller, artistic inline, or regular inline?

Search for a club that is specifically by that name, so not just skating but inline skating or roller skating, and ask what disciplines they do, that way you can make sure you get the right kind of skating club. If you find none in your area, continue doing ice skating (figure skating for artistic inline or artistic roller, hockey for free inline), they will teach you well enough, but you'll need to practice on rollers on your own.
FWIW, I started out as an ice skater completely. I had a few roller skating lessons before deciding they were completely worthless (there was virtually no instruction, and the level was laughable) and I went to practice further on my own. I can do spins and jumps on roller skates now (I do artistic inline besides figure skating on ice). The balance on rollers takes some getting used to but other than that it works much the same way for most of the basics (differences only appear with 3-turns and spins and certain types of jumps really, which is 1-5 years ahead of you, so I won't discuss that now. There's youtube videos discussing the difference between roller and ice though.)
